Archaeology

Karadağ and Binbir Kilise

Karadağ (Madenşehir) is the volcanic mountain 1 km southeast of Mesudiye. On it lie the Byzantine-era church and monastery ruins known as Binbir Kilise ("a thousand and one churches"). It is an archaeological site of international importance.

The Mahalaç summit reaches 2,288 m; an extinct volcano, part of the basaltic Karapınar volcanic field.
The Madenşehir and Değile settlements hold more than fifty Byzantine-era building ruins (5th–10th c.).
The first systematic documentation was carried out in 1907 by the British archaeologist William Ramsay and Gertrude Bell; their results were published in 1909 as The Thousand and One Churches.
In 1907, the year Mesudiye was founded, Ramsay and Bell were excavating at Karadağ — the founding of the village and the scientific excavation occurred almost simultaneously.

Prehistory

Mounds Around the Village

The four mounds around Mesudiye carry traces of prehistoric settlement reaching back thousands of years in the region — long before the village's founding in 1907.

Mounds are artificial hills formed over centuries by prehistoric settlements built one atop another. These four mounds around Mesudiye show that the region hosted human habitation for thousands of years, long before the village's founding in 1907. The positions on the map are approximate and for schematic purposes only.
