In the War of Independence he fought against the Greeks on the Kütahya-Dumlupınar front.

İsmail Gezici was born in Rumeli in the year 1894. His father is Hüseyin. He belongs to one of the muhacir (migrant) families who migrated to Anatolia together with their families in the last years of the Ottoman Empire.

When the War of Independence began, İsmail joined the defence of the homeland. He fought against the Greeks on the Kütahya-Dumlupınar front. This front, where the key battles of the Great Offensive took place, is the line on which the Turkish army won its decisive victory. By serving on this arduous front, İsmail Gezici contributed to the independence of the homeland.

The Kütahya-Dumlupınar line was the scene of the most decisive battles of the War of Independence. On this front, stretching from the Kütahya-Eskişehir Battles of 1921 to the Great Offensive of 1922, Turkish soldiers fought with great sacrifice against the occupying Greek army. As part of this historic struggle, İsmail Gezici is one of the symbols of Mesudiye's contribution to the War of Independence.

After the war came to an end, İsmail returned to his village and spent the remaining years of his life in Mesudiye. He died in Mesudiye on 20 March 1966. He is remembered as a gazi of the War of Independence who fought against the Greeks on the Kütahya-Dumlupınar front.
