Abdullah Akan
Yemen Front Veteran (1896 Rumelia – 3 Jul 1969 Mesudiye)
WWI Yemen front veteran. Wounded by shrapnel and survived because stream water cooled his wound. The 1934 Surname Law gave him "Akan" (flowing) as a tribute to the stream that saved his life.
Born in Rumelia 1896, Abdullah Akan served on the Yemen front in WWI. Wounded by shrapnel in combat, he collapsed beside a stream — and the cool flowing water kept the wound from becoming fatal.
When the 1934 Turkish Surname Law required every family to adopt a fixed surname, Abdullah chose "Akan" — meaning "flowing" — as a permanent tribute to the water that saved his life.
The choice is a direct example of how the 1934 reform allowed citizens to weave personal stories into family identity. Akan family members have continued in Mesudiye.
